Some collections happen because we are engaged in creative practices that require materials. The more we create, the more we love our materials, the more we need and want to acquire more. Often we acquire so many that we couldn’t possibly use all that we’ve gathered. The materials themselves becomes a collection.

Here we have an interview with and photographs of the studios of

Teesha Moore,

founder of artfest and artFIBERfest.

Teesha has generously shared with us a peek at her amazing studio and collections of art materials. As well, she answers our Collectors Survey questions about her collections and collecting habits.

Enjoy!

What constitutes a collection?

I think if you get obsessed over it and feel like you always need more, that constitutes a collection.

books

Is collecting an activity that enhances your creativity?

Absolutely! If it is something you are passionate about, then you will be excited everytime you find something else to add to it. That passion and excitement fuels creativity.

beads

What are some things you collect?

* books, 28 tall bookcases
* beads, love the colors…eye candy
* fabric, my first medium for creating pens, no matter how many I have, I always need more
* weird dolls, this goes back to my first collection: rag dolls
* magazine pages, this is a total obsession

journal desk

How would you react if something happened to your collection?

Well…mom threw away my “small box” collection that I kept under my bed along with my stationery collection one day when I was at school. You deal with it. I suppose it taught me not to hold onto anything tightly. I don’t save/collect anything for sentimental reasons. Everything has to excite me right now or else why buy it? I’ve had many other collections that I tired of and got rid of.

What has collecting taught you about people or life?

That nothing is THAT important. Although I’d have a meltdown over losing my library, I’d get over it. I’m thankful that I am able to indulge my obsessions/collections as many cannot. the only collection I’d try to grab if I had to vacate immediately would be my journals I’ve kept over the years. But even those I could live without.

Of herself, Teesha says,

I’m a 42 year old self taught artist, an art retreat organizer (artfest and artFIBERfest). I’ve published art magazines for 8 years,(the studio, PLAY and Art & Life). I design rubber stamps and own Zettiology. I teach around the country and have two daughter ages 19 and 21 and a husband of 24 years. My life is good.
