10. What has collecting taught you about people or life?

treasures are in the eye of the beholder; anything, anyone can be a treasure!

It seems that people either have the collecting gene or they don’t! I have seen people get far too carried away. I have had many good experiences with like-minded people, sharing our collections with each other and appreciating them. It can be a very social activity. I feel a little better these days with some better perspective on my collections. In the past, they have owned me rather than the other way around.

Collecting is done by different types of people with different agendas. I think many collections show a very materialistic side of people. I have found this in myself as well. Now I try to collect cheap or free stuff. “Different strokes for different folks” and “you can’t take it with you” are fine and fitting cliches that can tie in easily to collecting.

The main lesson is that the desire to have is more important (and more fun) than the actual having. Also that when strangers see a giant PEZ collection, they immediately wish they were a collector also!

That things which were considered cheap and disposable at the time of manufacture are often the most interesting in subsequent years. That collecting should not be about monetary value or investment. People who are motivated by that are not collectors in the true sense because they have no real empathy or interest in the objects themselves. That my affliction is astonishingly common!

Collecting has taught me how diverse people are and how such different things can become valued no matter how small or insignificant they may seem to someone else.

It’s the little things that make life enjoyable. That’s what collecting is all about for me.

That I am a greedy and sad little piggy who wants all the toys? Actually it can be very cool to meet other people through it but I’m no sneaker geek type. I just have fun and use all my collections
